People want to know – and deserve to know – where their food and drink comes from, which is why Forever Living is proud to say that a plant-to-product philosophy is the way that we’ve always done business, not because it’s ‘cool’, but because one of our core principles is a belief in doing things right.
We are a vertically integrated company, and this means we not only own the manufacturing and distribution operations, but also the physical ground where our aloe grows. We are so confident in our process and the quality products that it produces, that we consider ourselves ‘The Aloe Vera Company’, and after reading more about this process and the purity of our produce, we think you will too!
From the moment our aloe is rooted in the ground, we ensure every single plant is carefully nurtured to ensure the thick, green leaves grow plump and strong. Once the lower leaves reach maturity, after about a year, we harvest each one by hand. Only the leaves that have reached full maturity are harvested to ensure we can extract the largest amount of pure aloe vera gel. After removal from the plant, each leaf is transported to our onsite processing station for washing and filleting. We wash each leaf twice before filleting it by hand; hand filleting ensures that the rind is fully removed and only the nutritious inner leaf gel is left. Next the aloe vera gel passes through several quality check stations and any anomalies are removed before it travels to the aseptic tank for processing. This whole process is completed within six hours of harvesting to ensure all of the aloe’s beneficial properties remain intact. During the aseptic process the aloe is flash heated to lock in the benefits and freshness, while safely reducing bad bacteria without the need for preservatives. This process ensures the final product tastes as fresh and is as nutritious as possible. The pure aloe gel is then bulk packed into large totes for transportation to one of our manufacturing facilities.
Over eight million gallons of aloe vera gel passes from our plantations to our manufacturing facilities each year. Aloe Vera of America, located in Dallas, Texas, is the manufacturing hub for our entire aloe operation around the world. This state of the art facility boasts the latest in manufacturing technology, product labs, and product research and development. Once our bulk gel reaches the manufacturer, additional ingredients are added as required by our proprietary formulas. With 99.7% inner leaf gel, Forever Aloe Vera Gel is as close to cutting open a fresh aloe vera leaf as you can get!
Other formulas include Forever Aloe Berry Nectar and Forever Aloe Peaches which are flavoured with fruit juices and concentrates for a fruity, delicious taste. The product is tested to make sure it meets all product specifications and is then flash heated a second time. This ensures that any of the added ingredients haven’t introduced anything into the formula that could compromise its quality or integrity. From here the formula heads to the packaging line.
Each package is flat until filled with Forever’s aloe vera drinks. This sterile packaging is moulded and crimped into the Tetra Pak shape as it’s filled; once full the cap is added in a vacuum sealed sterile chamber. Final quality inspections are performed, and our aloe drinks are released for shipment with all the goodness sealed inside.
Regional distribution centres at Aloe Vera of America and Forever Direct in the Netherlands supply Forever products to over 158 countries around the world. Owning our own distribution has allowed us to control lead times, reduce cost and assure our stringent quality standards are upheld throughout our distribution channels. These facilities provide bulk replenishment to smaller distribution globally, and now ship directly to customers in twelve countries! A complex system of cutting edge technology ensures that each product you order is carefully packaged together in the most efficient way, guided by our exemplary teams who take pride in being part of this significant supply chain. Once filled, each package is carefully reviewed for accuracy and sealed with care to make sure that it arrives safely to your door.
Our ‘from plant, to product, to you’ philosophy ensures that we can control the cost, and most importantly the quality of our products at every step of the process, and this means that you can feel confident in knowing that you are getting the very best product – from plant, to product, to you.
• Is the new gel stabilised?
Yes. The new aseptically processed gel is stabilised through pH adjustments. Our stabilisation process helps to ensure the natural components of aloe are maintained in levels that are as close to the fresh plant as possible, and it also helps protect the aloe from oxidation and breakdown that can occur during transport.
• Do the new gel drinks still use the patented process?
The patented process used to produce the gel drinks in the past has been replaced with the new aseptic process, allowing us to manufacture these products without adding any preservatives. We are investigating new opportunities to patent parts of the new aseptic process that are unique to Forever.
• Does the new gel have preservatives?
No. The new aseptic processing used at both our farms and through manufacturing allows us to produce a stabilised inner leaf aloe vera gel without the use of chemical preservatives and additives.
• Is there more or less aloe gel and juice in the new drinks?
Our scientists were able to put more aloe vera gel and other natural juices in each of the new formulas.
- • Forever Aloe Vera Gel is now 99.7% pure inner leaf aloe vera gel
- • Forever Aloe Berry Nectar increased to 90.7% pure inner leaf aloe vera gel
- • Forever Aloe Peaches increased to 84.5% pure inner leaf aloe vera gel
This means you get more of our amazing stabilised aloe gel in each product.
• Why are the products manufactured somewhere other than Aloe Vera of America?
Aseptic manufacturing requires specific facilities to create and manufacture to maintain a formula with no added preservatives. These facilities are trusted partners that have been chosen specifically for their ability to uphold and maintain the stringent quality and manufacturing standards put forward by Aloe Vera of America using our pure aloe vera gel.
• Is the new gel more natural/pure?
Because the new aloe vera gel is now aseptically processed at the farms, we are able to provide a fresher tasting product and stabilise the inner leaf aloe vera gel without the use of chemical preservatives. This means the new Forever Aloe Vera Gel contains 100% stabilised inner leaf gel made up of just three components (99.7% inner leaf aloe vera, ascorbic acid and citric acid).
• What was removed or changed in the gel?
Our new aseptic processing techniques at the farms have allowed us to provide a fresher tasting product and remove chemical additives and chemical preservatives in both the stabilised aloe vera gel and in the finished products. We have removed ingredients such as sorbitol, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate and xanthan gum from the various global formulas. The new formulation has allowed us to have a single global formula for our Forever Aloe Vera Gel, Forever Aloe Berry Nectar and Forever Aloe Peaches, and each of these formulas now has a fresher taste.
• What is the purpose of the two ingredients added to the aloe gel to make our stabilised inner leaf aloe vera gel?
Our process has always included the use of citric acid and ascorbic acid, both of which are already naturally occurring in aloe. The new aseptic manufacturing process allows us to remove any added chemical preservatives such as sodium benzoate or potassium sorbate. We are now able to use only citric acid and vitamin C. These two ingredients help ensure a fresh taste by adjusting the pH of the aloe and adding a nutritional boost.
• What is aseptic processing?
Aseptic processing refers to the entire process required to produce our aloe vera drinks with no added preservatives. The raw inner leaf aloe vera gel is processed at the plantations within six hours of harvesting by quickly flash heating to safely reduce bad bacteria and lock in freshness. Once combined with the other ingredients in the formula, the product is then flash heated a second time to ensure that none of the added ingredients have introduced anything to the formula that could compromise its quality.
• What makes the new process better?
The new process allows us to manufacture our inner leaf aloe vera gel without the use of chemical preservatives.
• Why do we flash heat the aloe vera gel? Can this be harmful?
Flash heating the inner leaf aloe vera gel safely reduces bad bacteria and locks in freshness. While it is true that heat can impact the nutrient content of foods, the processes involved, and the length of time food is exposed to heat, impact the nutrient content of the food. This is why we flash heat as opposed to prolonged heat exposure. Our new aseptic process is specially designed for our aloe to minimise losses of nutrients that are sensitive to heat and maximise the nutrient content of the aloe.
• Are the gel drinks certified by the International Aloe Science Council (IASC)?
Yes. The IASC certification from the International Aloe Science Council is a symbol of quality. Only products that contain at least 15% aloe and in which that aloe meets the strict quality requirements of the IASC can bear the IASC mark. Forever Living’s Forever Aloe Vera Gel was the first aloe product to obtain this certification years ago and our new aloe gel drinks in Tetra Pak have all achieved this esteemed certification to set our aloe apart from the competitors. In fact, our stabilised inner leaf aloe vera gel used in each of our aloe drinks far exceeds the minimum requirements for certification. Our stabilised aloe vera gel contains approximately double the amount of acemannan required for certification and continues to meet all quality requirements for purity, potency and composition.
• What is acemannan?
Acemannan is a polysaccharide that is exclusive to aloe vera. This polysaccharide has been studied extensively and scientists attribute many of aloe’s benefits to this unique component of aloe. Acemannan is one of the key components tested by the IASC to identify quality aloe as part of its certification programme. Forever Living’s stabilised aloe vera gel has nearly double the amount of acemannan required for certification.
• Did the new process allow changes in the added sugars and sugar alcohols?
Yes. Because we were able to produce a fresher-tasting inner leaf aloe vera gel, we not only were able to remove the chemical preservatives, but we were also able to remove sorbitol (a sugar alcohol) and reduce the amount of added sugar. In fact, Forever Aloe Berry Nectar has 50% less added sugars and the new Forever Aloe Peaches has 40% less added sugars!
• Why is the texture and look of the new aloe drinks different?
The new equipment designed to process and package our aloe without the use of added preservatives requires that we standardise and optimise the sizes of the pulp in our aloe drinks. Because these pieces of aloe are further broken down in manufacturing, this creates a smoother mouth feel as well as a clearer look.
• Why is the new product called Forever Aloe Peaches instead of Forever Aloe Bits N`Peaches?
The new product is now called Forever Aloe Peaches and no longer contains bits of aloe. The new equipment designed to process and package our aloe without the use of added preservatives requires that we standardise and optimise the sizes of the pulp in our aloe drinks. This meant we could no longer use the bits. Instead, we increased the stabilised inner leaf aloe vera gel content and included delicious peach puree for a smoother taste and a higher content of juice from peach and aloe. The new Forever Aloe Peaches contains 100% juices from inner leaf aloe, peach and grape.
• Why are Forever Freedom and Forever Pomesteen Power not part of the new process and new packaging?
These two products have unique requirements and ingredients that are being thoroughly researched and require additional testing. Our team of scientists and engineers are still working on the enhancements to these products and hope to be able to convert these products to the new packaging and new processes at a later time.
• What kind of packaging are the new aloe drinks in?
Tetra Pak packaging provides a sterile environment and protects the formula from oxygen and light to maintain the nutritional values and flavours of our aloe drinks. The multi-layer technology provides stability and strength and is also more resistant to cracking in cold environments.
• Is the packaging recyclable?
Yes. The new Tetra Pak packaging not only helps maintain the integrity of our aloe gel by providing a sterile environment and protecting the formula from oxygen and light, but it is also made from recyclable materials. Forever also selected Tetra Pak because of the dedication to sustainability through equipment design that minimises energy use, GHG emissions and water use.
• Is the product the same size?
Yes. Although the shape is different, Forever Aloe Vera Gel, Forever Aloe Berry Nectar and Forever Aloe Peaches are still provided in a 1 litre container.
• What is the shelf life?
Our scientists have been conducting testing on the new formulas in the new packaging and we are excited to be able to launch this product with a two-year shelf life. This is an amazing accomplishment to provide a product without added chemical preservatives with a shelf life of two years.
• How long can the gel be consumed after opening?
The new aloe gel drinks do not contain added preservatives, so it is important to follow the instructions on the packaging and refrigerate after opening. The time that an open aloe drink with no added preservatives will last will depend on how it is refrigerated and consumed.
• Are the gel drinks suitable for vegans and vegetarians?
• Are the gel drinks Kosher certified?
• Are the gel drinks Halal certified?
